How things have changed

As a group we have come a long way, ideas have changed throughout the making of the music video. If you look through our initial idea and our finished production you can see how much we have changed and there are reasons behind it. For instance;

We changed the look of the one of the locations, the bedroom isn't the same as the one we started off with. We changed it after getting audience feedback that it looked a bit childish and didn't really fit in with our genre. So we changed it to a bedroom where there were red silk sheets, we thought this fitted better with our genre as it gave it a sexy look and red seems to be a common theme in our video.

Before
After

Audience feedback has been really important in how we produced our music video, another we changed was how our artist looked. We did research into star construction, however, we still didn't think our artist looked like a RnB artists. We tried to vary the use of make up, there were times when we needed heavy make up, and there were times we needed more of a natural look. It is important that our artist represents the genre correctly so that we can reach out to the right target audience. To begin with, Ria had brown hair, in the beginning of the video her hair was tied up and she used limited make up, we then changed it to her having red, this was important as red is a bold colour and we wanted to portray our artist as a independent woman.

Before

After

Our initial idea was to have Ria preparing dinner for her boyfriend, this was part of the narrative. Then we were going to have her going through a memory box and singing. We decided to change this because we didn't think it really worked and the whole bedroom scene didn't really fit in with our genre. Voyeurism is important in female RnB singers, when we first started filming, I don't think we really did much with it, especially with the dinner bit. We wanted to show our audience that Ria is sexy, she isn't normally the kind of woman you find in the kitchen but she'd make the extra effort just for her boyfriend. We decided to keep both our ideas, but just work on it a bit more to improve it. We also decided to change the beginning narrative, by having Ria speaking to her boyfriend and once again him disappointing her.

Our narrative

We have come to a conclusion, that if we were to further our project it would be a sequel for example R kelly trapped in the closet part 1-22 the series tells the story of a one-night stand that sets off a chain of events, which gradually reveals a greater web of lies, sex and deceit.

Another example is Neyo song one in a million where it ended with him arguing with a woman the continuing video is "Beautiful monster" where we see the woman Neyo was arguing tuning into a "beautiful monster".

Garage Band
We decided to end our opening scene with a voice over, we created a answer machine on Garage band of Ria ex lover calling her to apologies, it the scene then ends with Ria leaving.

Ancillary Task

As a group, we thought it was important to intertexualise with artists. our idea of having Ria facing the camera, facing us came from Beyonce's CD Album 'Sasha Fierce' we thought it ticked all the boxes you would find for a RnB female single, and it was very effective doing so.

Before

I have tried to recreate the Beyonce look on our artist using photoshop. Before editing the footage the photo looked like this:

After

I used the adjustment curve on photoshop to make the image brighter. Our song title is 'So Invisible' I tried to show this on our CD cover by making some parts of her body look invisible.

Before

The idea was to re- create the cover of Beyonce's album.
After

I used a range of image effects such as adjustment curve, auto tone, contrast and colour. I think this was very effective playing around with photoshop gives you a chance to see that there is so much that can be done and it does make a difference to the whole photo. I thought it was significant for Ria's tattoo to stand out because the song is about her not being appreciated by her boyfriend 'Terrell'. Also, because the song is titled 'So Invisible' I wanted Ria to be centre of attention but also slightly invisible.

Font ideas for Digipack

These were all the fonts we thought would best suit the digipack, we wanted a sophisticated look, but also clear enough so that you can see what the title is.

CD and music advert

Makeover- We realised that we had to put on more makeup on our artist for our CD cover. From previous research we found that we had to put a lot of makeup on, as in studios makeovers they put a lot on so that it looks good in the camera and hides any blemishes.

This is how Ria looked before make up was applied.

Here is what she looked like during the process..

And this Ria finished with complete make up on.

Magazine Research/Music Adverts

By: Idowu Kukoyi
Essence magazine mainly aimed at Afro caribbean women. The woman on the cover is an actor and shows evidence of voyeuristic qualities.

This issue in particular is about making an individuals life better or how one can improve upon thier life. I will use this magazine to help develop our magazine by making our artist the centre of attention and stories that will benefit readers lives.

By: Meena Divine

Ebony is a monthly issued magazine, aimed at the African-American audiences. Producers usually publish images of successful black individuals on the front covers. On this specific magazine, Jennifer Hudson is the star

Elle is a worldwide magazine of French origin that focuses on women's fashion, beauty, health, and entertainment. Elle is also the world's largest fashion magazine. Jennifer Lopez is a worldwide icon, and I have noticed well-known people end up on cover magazine like Elle. J- Lo clearly uses voyeurism to grab readers attention.

Elle magazine focuses on style and personal issues, it is clear that  the main target audience are women, which explains why role model type actors and singers appear on the cover. This magazine will help when producing a magazine cover for our artist as it shows the individual should always be the main focus and voyeurism should be used as it grabs readers attention.

Q magazine is the UK's biggest music magazine where the likes of John Lennon and Bob Dylan have been on the cover of.

Cheryl Cole is the main focus of attention on this magazine cover. She's wearing bright red lipstick, which is nicely colour co- ordinated with the colour scheme of the magazine. Cole is wet and that can be seen as very seductive, as well as, licking her ring. In the magazine Cheryl Cole's name is bigger than the album name, which is very effective. This magazine cover will help when producing a magazine cover because it shows me the importance of the artist being the centre of attention in order to engage readers.

Music Advert
Whilst undertaking this research I have found that their is not many magazine music adverts, I have found adverts produced by A2 students specifically on the RnB genre, however we have found little adverts for RnB female artist.

By Idowu
Rihanna is the centre of attention in the advert and it is identical to her album cover. From this I will consider when making my own practice task to make sure I recreate the theme of our CD cover onto our music advert.

This however is promoting Madonna tour, however also has a her album in the left side corner of the advert. The advert is very colourful with where to buy the album stated clearly.

Our Music Advert

We had to change our advert, although the images fits our genre, we would be marked down as we didn't use a creative font or include our CD cover which is common in female Rnb covers.

Here is our New and improved music advert:

Re-drafted Story

The story now goes as followed, the woman's boyfriend has stood her up then we see her lip sync the song, she prepares dinner for him and he doesn't turn up, then we see her lip sync the song. She looks through her memory box, we then see a flashback of them together. She looks at the picture, calls him, saying he should come over. We see our artist getting ready. She opens the door and her girls are there, finally, the video ends with girls laughing.

Ideas for Digipak

Digipack dimensions
We looked online to find the dimension of the digipack and we found that it is; 139.5 x 125.5mm

CD Cover  Research

Beyonce Sasha fierce
we will be intexualising with this CD cover, we like that Beyonce looks natural and has little emotions almost symbolising her hiding her feelings. we will recreate this for the front of our cd cover.

Ashanti

Estelle

the colour of our cd cover is black and white, we were thinking about doing a close up of her face in black and white and her lips red.

Wednesday 7 March 2012
We sat down as a group and discussed our final project, as our song is entitled so invisible, We therefore want to show this. Typically in RnB female videos the artist is the centre of attention on the cover.  So we cant show the artist being invisible on the front cover. We are therefore going to have an image on the inside cover of the artist looking at pictures and the pictures showing her being invisible.

By Haddi Jallow

This is how I would want the CD cover to look as we have chosen an RnB artist, and because the song is about not being acknowledged, I thought it was appropriate to have one where the artist is sitting near a window and looking out, but she should use voyeurism to attract people to by her CD.

By Idowu Kukoyi

Here is a rough copy of what I would like our CD cover to look like, I would like to show her in the park with a blurred background, so she is in the focus. Showing her whole body reinforcing the convention of voyeurism.

By Amena-Devine

Here are my ideas for the digipack. All of the CD covers convey close up emotion of Ria the actress and is concentrated on her as a person. The first cover shows 1/2 her face with a black background and her eyes are heavily covered with make up. The second cover is a close up of her face with no make up to show her vulnerability. The third shot is of her whole body looking seductively into the camera with a black background.

Problems we have been facing

Because, one of our actors are very unreliable, we have decided to no longer use him as he has other commitments. We have now decided to keep all pictures and footage of Moses and we have checked with Moses to make sure he's happy with it, however, in the actual music video, you won't actually see him. We have decided to this because it is too late to now find someone to replace him, so after great discussion we have decided to use someone who is looks like Moses from the back.

Wednesday 8th February
We were near finishing our music video, when we discovered when we uploaded our footage onto final cut we set it up wrong, we therefore lost our footage. Adding to this the Sd card used to film was damaged; we therefore need to film our music video within the deadline. We aim to do this by filming every day and loaning out a mac from school so we can edit straight after filming.

Wednesday 14 March
we have since re filmed and our near finish our music video, below is some videos showing someone of the footage we managed to retrieve from the damaged Sd card and what we have filmed.

Feedback

From our feedback lesson we have decided to make a few changes and addition to our music video.
1) The first addition is from the ending scene instead of our artist to remain down about her breakup we see her moving on.
2) Film more cutaways of the artist singing e.g. in the drama studio with a spotlight or a white background

Our ideas have changed and developed further, we no longer see masses of the guy we now only seen snippets.

Filming Diary

Saturday  7th  January

  • Our artist was unable to come to the shoot as she had a Saturday revision class.
Wednesday 11th January

  • After school today we took pictures of our artists so that we could do our construction and be able to explain what costume they will be wearing and how their hair and make- up will be.
  • We also practised video-in-video, Haddi directed Ria and Moses, she asked them to sit on the playground bench and hold a frame for 10seconds, then start acting. Haddi explained exactly what she wanted them to do. We didn't want the picture to look too posed as it wouldn't look natural.

Friday 13th January

  • Unfortunately we were unable to film today as Ria and Moses had school commitments they had to attend to.
Saturday 14th January
  • Today we went out filming today, because we had issues with finding a room to film, we didn't want to waste another day of not filming. We had to tweak our storyboard and make a few changes, we decided to change it to where Ria would be waiting for Moses outside a restaurant, where she gets a text saying that he wont be able to make it. We had ria sitting by a water fountain and outside a restaurant where she looked disappointed and let down once again because he had cancelled on her.
  • Issues we faced when filming: because it gets dark really quickly, we had to work at a faster pace in order to have got this section done. There were continuity issues as we were in Canary Wharf and it is a busy area, so if we were unable with the footage we had to go out and film it again.
Thursday 19th January
  • Today we focused on the middle of the music video, where Ria was mainly in the bedroom, going through a memory box from the things Moses had given her. We used a range of camera shots, so that the camera wasn't placed in one shot and there was more of a variety.
  • Issues we faced when filming: unfortunately, our artist still hadn't learnt the lyrics of the song, she is currently in year11 and hasn't had time to do do. So the boost her confidence we were singing along with her and Idowu had her phone connected to speakers so we could listen to the song and to make sure the lip syncing was accurate.
Friday 20th January
  • Today we will be focusing on the beginning of the song, where Ria is preparing a meal for Moses as it is his birthday. She has gone through all this effort to find out that he's out shopping with another girl.
  • Issues we faced when filming: the actor was being uncooperative as it was late and we had been filming till late the previous night.

Friday 27th January
  • Today, will hopefully be last day of filming, we have little bits which we need to include, and tweak a few things. We have decided to had a spotlight scene, where Ria is singing to the camera, we thought this would be effective as we haven't really covered the notion of looking.
  • Issues we faced when filming:

  • Wednesday 1st February 2012
  • Today we reviewed all our footage and found that it followed little conventions of an RNB  female video. se we Re filmed the middle in a more dressed up bedroom with silk red sheets.
  • Issue we faced when filming:We had little issue faced whilst filming the new and improved bedroom scene  as we had planned prior to us filming.

Wednesday 15 February 2012
Today we lost all our footage due to our memory card being damaged. we will be filming tomorrow throughout the weekend. so we can still film within our deadline.

Sunday 19 February
We have so finished filming the beginning narrative including the dinner scene and the middle the bedroom scene. all that left to do is the filming of the ending narrative and addition lip syncs.

Wednesday 14 March 2012
We have finish filming our music videos however we are now editing our footage, we also working on our print task. Below is examples of how we improved our footage...

Video 1
This video show how we developed our opening scene further. Previously we panned up on our artist, but in our improved footage we intexualised with Keyisha Cole video.
  • Improving mis-en-scene is evidently in the video, she is wearing  a seductive dress and her hair is braided to the side and dyed red.
  • the location is has also change we used blue and red satin sheets to create a glamour's and sexy bedroom.

Video 2

As a group we had to be supportive of our artist so we sang along with her.
  •  The camera angle has changed
  • we have chosen to put red lipstick on our artist as it is a common convention of RnB females video
  • We have used a different background.

Video 3
whilst looking at our footage we found that their wasn't enough shots that showed our artist looking glamourous and seductive. We re filmed this bit i particular and was a success. her red lipstick really pops.
