'Poison' by Idowu Kukoyi
  • Colour scheme on the cd packaging is identical to what the director chose in the video Poison. The contrasting colours red and white symbolizes her spilt personality of being a good and bad superhero.
  • Costume: Black and skin tight in the album cover equally in the video as the bad superhero wears a leather jumpsuit, this is a common characteristic in female pop videos that adds voyeurism.
  • The makeup: the contrast of  her sharp eye and red lip stick again shows the contrast between her spilt personality. Red lip stick creates a sexy and seductive look. The colour red could also symbolize danger and most obviously blood which could symbolize defeat.

Applying the Andrew Goodwin theory to Nicole's video 'Poison'  has highlighted to me the importance of star construction, I think in our music video I feel we have to have a confident, outgoing individual who's confident enough to flirt with the camera.

'Best thing I never had' by Haddi Jallow

    • Beyonce has always been known as feminist. All her songs have always been about women being able to do well for themselves without depending on a man.
    • Costume: on the CD packaging Beyonce is seen wearing a tutu, this is similar to the costume she was wearing her actual video. Beyonce uses voyeurism as a key feature in  her video as she uses her body to attract her audience.
    • The colour scheme: the light shines on her face makes her seem superior and that she's always in the spotlight. The colour of the lipstick used stands out.
    • The CD packaging's background looks dirty and this could possibly indicate that Beyonce is better than this.

    • The CD packaging is very colourful and stands out to the audience
    •  The Hand writing is very comical hence the name 'Who's laughing now'
    • The colours: purple, red, and black are very intense and bold
    • Shes from Romford and has made it very far in a short period of time so this CD picture shows her laughing at the people in her life that has put her down and made her think she Can't make it.
    • The purple criss-cross background stands out against her jet black hair and the red writing, making it more significant.

    What is 'Hip Hop'?
Hip Hop originated from the 1970s in New York City, the Bronx. Hip Hop is a musical genre that has a rhythmic background which is normally accompanied by rapping and a rhyming chant that is being repeated. Hip Hop has developed it's own subculture where four stylists elements have been identified; graffiti, break dancing, rapping/MCing and DJing/scratching. DJ Herc was seen as the Hip Hop father as he was very well known and was one of the very first to provide an influence on the vocal style of rapping by delivering simple poetry verses.

Artist J. Cole  is an American rapper and producer, originally from Germany. In 2009,  he was signed to Jay'z record label Roc Nation and two years later he released his debut album 'Cole World: The Sideline Story' before being signed Cole was releasing mix tapes.

Conventions of Hip Hop music video

Cole's video was shot in Brooklyn, New York, where Hip Hop originated from. Many Hip Hop artists songs are either about life or girls, and the storyline of this song is that Cole's playing basketball, a girl catches his eye and he tries to win her over. The choice of location is very familiar, as many Hip Hop artists have used similar locations and I think this is done to emphasise that he didn't come from a wealthy area and he still knows his roots, where he comes from. In Hip Hop music videos you always see the artist wearing well known brands, this to both promote the brand and to show their wealth. There are always close up of the artists jewellery to again emphasise their wealth and to show off their assets. The artist tends to have more of an involvement in the video, you see more of them instead of just hearing their voice. Other well known Hip Hop artists are; 50 Cent, T.I. and T-Pain.

      What is 'Indie/Rock' ?

Indie rock is a sub-genre that originated from 1980s from both the United Kingdom and USA. Indie rock includes indie pop, alternative rock, hardcore punk and new wave, it comes from the independent and small low budget labels which released a 'do-it-yourself' attitude with artists and bands. Artists tend to look at Nirvana for inspiration as they were many of the few bands that were being distinguished with this genre in the 1990s, gradually, a variety of styles were brought in.
      • Band Kings of Leon are an American band that were first formed in 1999. The band first had an early influence with Southern Rock and Blues, but as years passed they expanded their variety of genre. This bought them in more audiences as they were catering to more needs.

        Conventions of Indie/Rock music videos
KOL's Use Somebody has all the generic conventions of a indie rock music video, there's cross cut of where the lead singer is sitting down and when they're all on stage, this is significant as it is a representation of their day-to day lives. In the video there are many long shots, establishing and extreme close ups, this is to engage you and make you feel what the artist is singing. The artist or band are shown throughout the video, in a dark setting or the video tends to be shot in black and white. Video's are often filmed fast paced and you can feel the excitement and the positive vibe that comes from the video. The Fray and Artic Monkeys are some well known Indie rock bands.

What Is The History Of R&B?

Rhythm and Blues music, or R&B music, was originally termed "black music" and included any form of music intended for black crowds/audiences. It consisted of a combination of jazz, gospel, and blues music. The term "R&B" was originally created in the late 1940s in the United States to be used as a less offensive marketing term than black music, which then spread to different races of people and became popular. Today’s modern R&B music has a distinctly different sound than what it was when it was first made. It focuses on pop beats rather than the blues, gospel and jazz sounds of previous generations even though those elements are still sometimes present in R&B music. In the late 1940s and into the fifties, R&B groups consisted of brass instruments and woodwinds, as well as drums, piano and vocals. These elements were common in jazz bands, but R&B musicians produced a heavier sound with a steady beat. As the fifties progressed, the genre became known for its sexually suggestive lyrics and provocative dancing associated with it. As the R&B genre progressed throughout the decade, it started becoming known as soul music because of the people who sang the songs; with such powerful voices; it was also no longer only made by black artists. White musicians started composing R&B songs, though the genre was still dominated by black artists like Chubby Checker, Sam Cooke, and bands like The Miracles. R&B lyrics focused on the struggle of life, segregation, racial issues and how hard it is to make it coming from such a tough background.

          Beyonce- 1+1

          CONVENTIONS OF R&B VIDEOS

Beyonce's 1+1 music video contains voyeurism as she is wet and has no clothes on which appeals to men. It contains a range of close ups of water dripping down her body and running into her mouth which is very sexual behaviour. She thoughout the video touches herself and "innocently" plays with her hair. She wears her lingerie which conveys intimate behaviour as you are only supposed to wear that sort of costume to bed. Towards the end of the music video, Beyonce is in frame with a man that engages in sexual behaviour with her. R&B videos usually contain lyrics about feelings (especially love and Breakup) and Beyonce in this video shows this is a convention of R&B videos as it is contained in alot of her music videos.  Throughout most of the song,  shes by herslef which displays vulnerability. She has been made to look like shes wearing minimal make up, with a strong focus on the eyes with the dark eye coloured make- up used, this makes her more intense and is more signficant in close up shots.

What Is The History Of Afro-Beats?
Afrobeat music has been around for a long time, but it was only popularized in the 1970’s in Africa. It is a mixture of traditional Yoruba music, jazz and hip-hop mixed with percussion and different vocal styles e.g. computerized vocals. The main creator of this genre of music was a man called Fela Kuti, who gave it its name. Kuti used his music as a way of communicating with important figures in Africa for example: politicians and Mayors. He created the term "Afrobeat" upon his return from a U.S. tour with his group Nigeria '70. Afrobeat features chants, call-and-response vocals, and complex, interacting rhythms. Afrobeat today is now one of the most recognizable music genres and it is getting popular by the day. It has influenced a lot of artists in the creations of their own music and will hopefully continue to do so throughout the years.

TYPICAL FEATURES OF AN AFRO BEAT MUSIC VIDEO
Usually Afrobeat music videos contain  a lot of voyeurism: intimate behaviour between the artists and actors. The women contained in the videos are usually 1/2 naked and dancing with men. The artists are usually black males but there are female and male white artists that are also coming up in this genre. The video locations are usually in clubs to convey the amount of money that specific ethnic group does have. Boys usually wear smart, expensive suits or brand name clothes e.g. Ralph Lauren and Gucci. Women either wear lingerie to promote the artists or very expensive clothing. Editing these sorts of music are very hard because they are usually upbeat songs and the visuals have to go with the music.

Pop is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often oriented toward a youth market.
Adele is a British singer-songwriter who first performed her song 'Someone Like You' at the MTV music awards where her video was later released. The slow Ballad comes from Adele's relationships, the song is accompanied by a simple guitar expressing her feelings to her about her broken relationship. Conventionally ballads convey lots of emotion, either being in love or being heart broken. The video to the song definitely shows this as it is very simple and the lyrics of the song mean deeply to Adele as she is finding closure at the end of her relationship.
